Zabu encountered a young boy named Kevin Plunder as he was about to be attacked by a bunch of Gentleman-Apes. Zabu saved Kevin, and The 2 turned companions. Zabu shielded the boy as he grew to adulthood, and at some point took about the title Ka-Zar, which suggests "Son in the Tiger".
